Starc's wicket was Ashwin's 64th scalp in India's home season with which he left behind former World Cup winning skipper Kapil Dev, who had claimed 63 wickets in 1979-80.

On Day 1, Ashwin claimed two big wickets of skipper Steve Smith (27) and Matthew Renshaw (68).

Resuming play at 256/9, Australia added five more runs to their tally after Starc hit Ashwin for a boundary over past long-on. But Ashwin had the last laugh when Starc attempted a slog-sweep, which went straight to the fielder at deep midwicket.
