Sharad Pawar resigns as the president of Mumbai Cricket Association

New Delhi: Sharad Pawar, president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), on Saturday stepped down from the post. MCA joint secretary PV Shetty broke the news, after Pawar had called meeting to submit his resignation.

The move came after Pawar decided to 'fall in line' with the recommendations of the Lodha panel, which said that cricket administrators should not be over 70 and must not serve two consecutive terms.

Notably, a day after Supreme Court suggested Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Anurag Thakur could land in jail if perjury charges against him are prove, Pawar said that the apex court will now also organise cricket in the country.

“While I am closely associated with cricket, the matter is in the Supreme court. The Court is now going to decide how cricket will be organised. Till yesterday, they were guiding how to run the country. Now, they are also guiding the sports organisation,” Pawar was quoted as saying during the annual general meeting of industry chamber by PTI.

Pawar, who is a former president of the International Cricket Council and the BCCI, though refused to elaborate on his statement, “I don’t want to say anything about that. I don’t want to face contempt of court.”

SC came down hard on the current BCCI president Anurag Thakur for failing to implement the recommendations of the RM Lodha Committee approved by the Court.
