77 congested corridors in Delhi identified for immediate action

As many as 77 corridors in Delhi have been identified as facing severe traffic congestion, with Lt. Governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday ordering action to improve traffic flow on four to five such corridors on a pilot basis.

New Delhi: As many as 77 corridors in Delhi have been identified as facing severe traffic congestion, with Lt. Governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday ordering action to improve traffic flow on four to five such corridors on a pilot basis.

The directions came during a meeting at the Raj Niwas here during which six task forces constituted by Baijal in January submitted their recommendations, a statement from the Lt. Governor's office said.

The task forces identified the 77 congested corridors categorised into A, B and C on the basis of volume of road users and visibility of corridors, the statement said.

Twenty eight of the corridors were put under 'A' category.

During the meeting, the Lt. Governor emphasised that immediate implementation of various projects should be undertaken in a time-bound manner and said that a specific timeline will be fixed for each action point.

He asked Chief Secretary M.M. Kutty to initially identify four to five corridors on a pilot basis for taking immediate action.

Periodic monitoring and evaluation of impact of action on these interventions is to be done along with proper documentation, he said.

Baijal also advised the Transport Department to fast track the parking policy, rerouting of interstate buses and to ensure that buses do not ply without proper permits.
