DCW sets up committee to check open sale of acid

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has set up an expert committee which will prepare a model programme to check the open sale of acid and rehabilitate acid attack survivors.

New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has set up an expert committee which will prepare a model programme to check the open sale of acid and rehabilitate acid attack survivors.

The 11-member panel will conduct a research on the compliance of various instructions issued by the Supreme Court and governments to prevent the sale of acid.

It will draft a legislation for banning the sale of acid and prepare a model programme for the rehabilitation of acid attack survivors and bringing them into the mainstream, said a DCW official.

The panel will study the best practices and policies in the country or abroad for their rehabilitation, the official said.

"The committee will have a tenure of three months. It will submit its report to the Commission, which will send its recommendations to the government," DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said.

Besides Maliwal, the committee includes senior Supreme Court lawyers Rebecca John and Aparna Bhatt.
