EDMC sanitation workers call off strike completely

East Delhi sanitation workers who were protesting non-payment of salaries on Monday completely called off their 11-day-long strike.

New Delhi: East Delhi sanitation workers who were protesting non-payment of salaries on Monday completely called off their 11-day-long strike.

This was the last batch of workers who had continued their strike despite another section ending the protest on January 9 upon receiving salaries for the last two months.

The sanitation workers decided to return to their jobs after a meeting between MCD Swachhata Karmchari Union and EDMC officials, including Commissioner Mohanjeet Singh.

Over 17,000 sanitation workers of East Delhi Municipal Corporation had gone on strike from January 5 demanding payment of pending salaries and arrears among others.

President of the Union Sanjay Gehlot said a number of demands, including reinstatement of removed employees, promotion for educated workers, regularisation of those engaged since 2013 and jobs on compassionate grounds, were made at the meeting.

"The Commissioner accepted our demands and issued orders in this regard," he said.

Gehlot said he has appealed to sanitation employees to resume work and ensure cleanliness in East Delhi.

He, however, said a large number of employees from all the three MCDs will gather at Raj Ghat on February 7 and stage a demonstration against the Delhi government for "withholding" funds meant for the civic body.
