New Delhi: Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur, who is in the eye of a storm over her stance against student outfit Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and a video campaign advocating peace between India and Pakistan, has clarified that she has no plans to enter politics.

After getting police security at her hometown Jalandhar in Punjab, Gurmehar told Hindustan Times that she was “saddened” by the fact that “the issue on which I spoke went out of hand. I would like to clarify that I do not want to enter politics.”

The Lady Shri Ram College for Women student added: “I just gave my opinion, and I never expected the whole thing to take such a turn. I had a really bad time. I am not in a state to talk about it, and I cannot take it anymore.”

The daughter of a slain Army officer further likened the ABVP to a “lion that roars just once”, but added that she did not want to take her fight with the student body any further.

“I would be grateful if I were just left alone because neither my family nor I want to talk about it,” she said.

Trouble erupted in the otherwise placid Delhi University campus on February 21 when the ABVP forced the cancellation of a seminar at Ramjas College over the participation of a controversial JNU student.

The next day, ABVP activists were blamed for attacking students, teachers, and journalists in the campus, triggering widespread condemnation.

DU student Gurmehar Kaur then launched a social media campaign against the ABVP, only to face death and rape threats. On Tuesday, she left Delhi for Punjab, saying she was pulling out of the campaign.
