New Delhi: An Iranian student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday complained he was punched on the nose and roughed up by about 10 students, who were bursting firecrackers while celebrating after the India-Pakistan cricket match late in the night.
Withholding his identity, the student wrote a letter to the Chief Proctor of the university and alleged that the group started arguing with him when he was "observing" their loud celebrations and punched him on the nose.
"A student of Damodar hostel `D` Block named Vinay... was bursting crackers in the gallery. Then when the guard intervened, they started arguing with the him... (while) I was observing, one of them pushed me and Vinay punched me on the nose," the complaint letter, signed by JNU Students Union (JNUSU) Councillor Faisal Qureishi and a few witnesses, read.
There were about 10 men in the group, including Saurabh Sharma -- a former Joint Secretary JNUSU and an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) supporter, the letter said.
A separate complaint was filed by the guards to the Chief Security Officer of the varsity, in which they alleged they were manhandled by the students and of finding alcohol in Vinay`s room.
Although the Iranian student has demanded strict action in the case, an official from the Proctor`s office said the matter has been resolved.
"It was a mere altercation. The issue has been resolved by the warden of the hostel," a university official said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chinmoy Biswal told IANS that the police is investigation the complaint and that no FIR has been filed yet.
