New Delhi: Ten days ahead of the municipal polls, a 32-year-old Samajwadi Party worker was shot at today allegedly by some unknown persons in northeast Delhi's Ghonda area, with the party claiming the attack was "politically- motivated".
Police, however, said the crime seems to have been committed with an intent to rob the victim.
"Around 12:30 pm, some unidentified people attacked SP supporter Anil Kumar Prajapati at Ghonda Chowk. They fired five shots at him and ran away," the party said in a statement.
The victim was admitted to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.
Police said his condition is "stable". Prajapati is a resident of Rubber Factory area, Subhash Mohalla.
"This was premeditated and politically-motivated," SP's Delhi Unit's general secretary R S Yadav alleged.
"Prajapati was a close associate of SP's Ghonda's candidate Shyma and he was in charge of the publicity of her campaign. This assault was to affect her campaign. We appeal to the Police Commissioner and the State Election Commissioner to initiate a probe into the case," he said.
Yadav also demanded that all SP party candidates be provided police security to avert any further such incident.
