Remember! You have just one day - November 24 – to use your old Rs 500/1000 notes at public utilities

New Delhi: All those who want to spend their now defunct old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 have time till November 24 midnight to use them at public utilities.

After November 24, old notes would only be exchanged or deposited in banks till December 30 - unless the government extends the deadline once again just before it expires.

While withdrawing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from the night of November 8-9, the government had allowed use of the old currency at government hospitals, railway ticketing, public transport, airline ticketing at airports, milk booths, crematoria/burial grounds and petrol pumps for 72 hours.

This list was later expanded to include payments for metro rail tickets, highway and road toll, purchase of medicines on doctor prescription from the government and private pharmacies, LPG gas cylinders, railway catering, electricity and water bills and ASI monument entry tickets.

As banks struggled to give alternate currency, the deadline was extended by another 72 hours. That deadline was again extended till November 24.

The government allowed the use of old currency for purchases at consumer co-operative stores like Kendriya Bhandar with valid ID proof as also for paying court fee.

But payments towards utility bills was restricted to only individuals or households for arrears and/or current bills. No advance payments was allowed.

However, at the time of filing of this story on November 23 night, there was no official announcement from the government yet about the extension of date for usage of old notes at public utilities. This means that November 24, as fixed earlier, will be the last day to use the old notes.

These are the places were the old notes can be used for the last time as of November 24:

- Government hospitals

- Booking railway and metro tickets

- Booking airline tickets at airports

- Petrol pumps

- Consumer Co-Op stores

- LPG Gas cylinders

- Pharmacies with doctor prescription

- Power and water bills

- Milk booths

- Crematoria/burial grounds

- Entry tickets for ASI monument
