No takers for gender studies, human rights in CBSE schools

New Delhi: Subjects such as human rights and gender studies offered in Class 12 by the CBSE have not found any takers, prompting the board to stop offering them besides 5 other academic electives and 34 vocational courses.

"Considering very low enrolment, the subjects are withdrawn from the 2017-18 session," the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) said in a communication sent to the heads of schools affiliated to it.

The schools have been advised to not offer human rights, gender studies, philosophy, creative writing and translation studies, heritage craft, library and information science and graphic design, theatre studies as academic electives.

However, students who opted for these subjects in Class XI will be allowed to pursue them this year and appear for board examinations too.

Thirty-four vocational subjects which have also been dropped from the list available to Class 12 students include poultry nutrition and physiology, management of dairy animals, health education, communication, confectionery, music aesthetics, office communication, first aid and emergency medical care, and integrated transport operations.
