New Delhi: Indira Ekadashi is considered to be an important day according to the North Indian calendar. This year, it is being observed on September 26. Indira Ekadashi falls during the Pitru Paksha period. And, as a result, some also call it Ekadashi Shradh.

It is widely observed by Hindus as a relaxation for their sins. It is also believed that Indira Ekadashi has the powers to relax the souls of one's forefathers.

As described in Brahma Vaivarta Purana, the importance of Vaishnava Indira Ekadashi was explained to Dharamraj Yudhisthira by Lord Krishna. It is said that if a person observes this day with complete dedication, then the individual can seek a place in Vaikunth.

Some often claim that fasting on this day can give benefits equivalent to those obtained from Ashwamedha Yagya.

Indira Ekadashi fast:

* Followers of Lord Vishnu fast all day long on Indira Ekadashi. Some, also pursue Nirjala Vrat. It must be remembered that the fast starts from the dawn and continues till the sunrise of next day.

* The fast can only be broken keeping in mind the specific Muhurat mentioned in the Vaishnava calendar.

* The day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Prayers are held by the devotees. Lord Vishnu is made offerings and blessing are sought for the well-being. Rituals are also performed for the betterment of the ancestors.
