Kolkata, Sept 06: Close on the heels of the shocking baby death case in a city hospital, the Trinamool Congress today alleged that 26 children had perished in the last five days in another hospital here, with party chief Mamata Banerjee demanding the arrest of West Bengal chief minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee on the issue.
Trinamool Congress activists gheraoed the sueprintendent of the city's oldest hospital Calcutta Medical College during the day, accusing the authorities of negligence in the treatment of babies.
''26 children have perished in the CMC during the last five days,'' Banerjee told newspersons at her residence.
Referring to the death of 18 babies within a span of three days in the B C Roy Memorial Children's hospital earlier this week, Banerjee said the left front government had no moral right to remain in power 'even for a day'.

In fact, Banerjee went a step further and held Bhattacharjee accountable for the deaths.
Training her guns on the chief minister, she alleged that instead of bringing to book those whose callousness caused the deaths of the children in the hospital the police were filing FIRs against political parties who staged demonstration on the issue.
''It is Bhattacharjee against whom fir should be filed. He should be arrested,'' she said.
Banerjee also claimed that 955 babies had perished in the B C Roy Memorial Children's hospital in the first eight months of the year. Bureau Report
