Kuwait City, July 26: Kuwait denied today
that it had been informed by Iran that Tehran was detaining
al-Qaeda spokesman Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, who was stripped of
his Kuwaiti citizenship over his terror links.
"We were not informed that Sulaiman Abu Ghaith is in Iran and no one told us that he is going to be handed over to Kuwait," Prime Minister Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah told reporters.
"Abu Gaith is not Kuwaiti, we do not care much for him. His citizenship was withdrawn," Sheikh Sabah said. Earlier this month, a Saudi newspaper quoted Kuwait's interior minister as saying that the emirate had turned down an Iranian offer to extradite the spokesman of Osama bin Laden's terror network.
The remark, which would have been the first confirmation that Abu Ghaith is held in Iran, was denied by the minister to reporters the next day.
"Kuwait has not been told that Iran holds Abu Ghaith, and our instructions from the foreign ministry are not to take him (if an extradition offer is made)," Sheikh Nawaf told reporters.
Iran admitted for the first time on Wednesday that it was holding prominent members of the al-Qaeda network, but their identities remain a mystery. Bureau Report
