New Delhi, June 29: The Army today said the weapon handed over by Lieutenant General A K A Niazi during Pakistan's surrender in the 1971 war was in safe custody at the Indian Military Academy Museum and that the pistol stolen from the National Museum here could have been that of another Pakistani officer.
"It is a proper service weapon of the Pakistan Army and it is a revolver, not a pistol, and is in the safe custody at the IMA Musuem (Dehradun)," a senior Army official said on conditions of anonymity.
The weapon handed over by Niazi to Lieutenant General J S Arora, Army's Eastern Commander in Dhaka, was a 7.62-mm revolver which the Bangladesh war hero presented to the IMA, he said. The stolen pistol which was exhibited at the Maritime Heritage Hall of the National Museum could be one of the weapons surrendered by other Pakiatan military officers during the mass surrender in Dhaka, the official said. The pistol found missing yesterday was described as the weapon surrendered by the Pakistani General. Bureau Report
