Rameswaram: Eighteen holy water sites, encroached over the years, have been identified in this island by an organisation, initiated by the former president A P J Abdul Kalam.
‘Green Rameswaram’ has identified the holy water sites, using old map and district gazette and other documents available with the temple authorities, Coordinator of the organisation Saraswathi told reporters here today.
The water sites named after Parasurama, Narayana, Saravana, Sarvaroga Nivarana, Meera, Krishna, Simha, Brahma among others had been encroached by various persons, and they would be removed.
These would be restored to their original shape by the district administration and temple and the green initiative so that rain water also could be harvested in them, she said.
The famous Lord Ramanathaswamy temple here, thronged by pilgrims from across the country, at present has 22 holy water sites while there more some others outside and it is believed that taking bath in these is sacred.
