Holi 2016: Holika Dahan timings

A day before the actual celebrations, people collectively organise a bonfire (termed as Holika Dahan) to mark the victory of good over the evil.

Indians across the world are gearing up for the vibrant and joyous festival of Holi which falls on March 24 according to the Gregorian calendar. Going by the Hindu Lunar calendar, Holika Dahan concurs with the full moon day in the month of Phalguna, a day which is called Phalguna Purnima.

People celebrate the festival of colours or Rangwali Holi with friends, family and neighbours with utmost fervour and zest. But a day before the actual celebrations, people in the neighbourhood collectively organise a bonfire (termed as Holika Dahan) to mark the victory of good over the evil.

There is a legend associated with the tradition of Holika Dahan. The pristine devotion of a young boy named Prahalada succeeds in annihilating the powers of his aunt Holika who attempts to kill her nephew him on her brother Hiranyakashyapu’s behest.

People offer water, turmeric, coconut to the bonfire and seek blessings for a joyous life. (The offerings may vary from region to region).

The Muhurt for Holika Dahan is important.

This year, the Muhurt for the Dahan will last for over 2 hours and 25 minutes precisely.

It will start at 6:31 PM to 8:56 PM (IST) approximately on March 23.
