Shillong, July 20: With detection of polio virus in neighbouring Assam's Goalpara district, Meghalaya government has decided to take up Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation (IPPI) programme in five adjoining districts of the state. The decision was taken in an emergent meeting to discuss the implementation of IPPI programme as concerns were voiced that the virus could spread from Assam's Goalpara district to the neighbouring areas of Meghalaya if immediate and strong action was not taken, official sources said here today.
The programme would be taken up in three Garo Hills, Ri-Bhoi and West Khasi Hills districts on July 27 and August 31 next. Under this, a team would make exclusive house to house survey for administration of oral polio vaccination to each targeted child.
The meeting, which was attended by senior district civil and health officials, also decided to form a taskforce committee to review the micro plans for the mop-up programme. Bureau Report
