Lucknow, Oct 07: In what will gladden Congress, Mulayam Singh Yadav cabinet in Uttar Pradesh today reversed the decision of erstwhile Mayawati government creating a new district named after Dalit icon Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj that included parts of Congress president Sonia Gandhi's Lok Sabha constituency Amethi. A meeting of the cabinet, presided by Yadav, unanimously decided to disband the Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj district, a highly-placed source told newspersons here.
Congress has strongly protested creation of the new district carving out areas of Amethi which had in the past been represented by Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
The notification to create Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar was issued by Mayawati government on may 21 by carving out districts of Rae Bareli and Sultanpur which formed part of Amethi constituency.
