The Pentagon for the first time described several pockets of resistance in the north of Afghanistan as US forces marshal in the southern regions of the country, the New York Times reports in its Tuesday edition.

Among the areas of resistance was an enclave near Mazar-i-Sharif where up to
2,500 hard-core Taliban and foreign fighters have refused to surrender, the
Times said.
