Kathmandu, Sept 15: There was no let up in Maoist violence in Nepal as rebels set-off a series of bomb blasts targeting government offices and shot dead two police personnel in the capital today. Maoists exploded at least three bombs in government buildings housing the Central Fishery Development Office and Department of Standards, Weights and Measure at Balaju on the outskirt of Kathmandu at 8.45 am.

The blasts caused extensive damage to the offices, according to the radio Nepal. However, no one was injured. Rebels attacked police personnel deployed at the popular tourist centre of Pokhara in western Nepal this morning, killing one policeman.

Constable Raju Srestha, who was with the police cell set up recently to provide security to tourists, was shot dead by four motorcycle-borne Maoists. Police found a Chinese made pistol used by the rebels.

Security has been stepped-up in the area following the first ever strike by the rebels in the area. In another incident, an inspector was killed and a sub-inspector was injured when rebels attacked a police patrol party at a market in Nepalgunj.

Meanwhile, state-run daily 'Rising Nepal' alleged that the Maoist rebels were on an extortion spree targeting ex-servicemen from British Gurkha, Indian Army, Singapore Police and Royal Nepal Army in different parts of the kingdom.

With the arrest of five more Maoists, the number of rebels arrested under the anti-terrorism law has gone to 18, the paper said. Government had declared Maoists "terrorists" following the unilateral termination of cease-fire by the rebels on August 27.
