Dhaka, July 21: Bangladesh government has abandoned the search and salvage operation of a ferry which capsized on July 8 with hundreds of people on board, official sources said today.
Authorities in southeastern district of Chandpur were ordered late last night to abandon the search and salvage operation.
The total death toll from the ferry disaster is yet to be ascertained as there is no system of registering passengers boarding them.
The government, meanwhile, has taken up several steps to stop riverine accidents, including using trained crews to run ferries, stop running of faulty ferries and penalize violators.
The authorities are also encouraging day time travel on river routes to avoid ferry disaster following discussions with ferry owners.
