New Delhi, May 16: The Delhi High Court has issued notices to officials of MCD, NDMC and Delhi Cantonment Board asking them to explain why prosecution should not be launched against them for failing to address garbage disposal problem in the capital. "Notices are issued to these officials to remain present and explain why prosecution be not launched against them," said a bench comprising Chief Justice B C Patel and Justice B D Ahmed and fixed the next date of hearing on May 19. The order to this effect followed the hearing of a public interest litigation seeking court`s direction to the civic authorities to contruct garbage dump for disposal of plastic waste in various localities of the capital. The PIL, filed by M K Dhar, a resident of Mayur Vihar had sought construction of a garbage dump and the court had asked the DDA to provide land to the MCD for the same.
The bench expressed dissatisfaction with the civic authorities for not complying with the legal provisions to safeguard against environment pollution.
Dhar`s counsel told the court that in spite of notices, no action was taken by the local authorities.
Unhappy with the MCD`s reply on the issue, the court asked MCD joint director A A Khan to appear before it and file an additional supplementary affidavit.
The DDA counsel told the court that an allotment has been made and a letter stating the same had been sent to MCD.
