Balaghat (MP), Oct 17: In an apparent bid to disrupt electioneering in Madhya Pradesh, suspected naxalites today triggered a series of explosions near a police outpost in Lanji, about 75 km from here, destroying a road bridge.
However, there were no reports of any casualty, police said.
The first explosion rocked the naxalite-affected area barely a kilometre from Debarbeli police outpost in which a small road bridge was blown off this morning, Superintendent of Police Jaideep Prasad said.
This was followed by two successive attacks on the police teams deputed on motor-cycles to the explosion site but police personnel escaped unhurt in the blasts, he said. Prasad said the explosions, the first major strike by naxalites in the area since July this year- were targeting police personnel ahead of the December 1 assembly polls in the state.
Police personnel in strength were later sent to the area and assistance of explosive and land-mine experts was being taken to ascertain nature of explosives used in the blasts,
Prasad said police is yet to identify the naxalite outfit responsible for the explosions. There are three major groups active in the area. Bureau Report
