New Delhi, Dec 05: The outstanding amount of income-tax disputed before the income tax appellate tribunals stood at Rs 28,941.02 crore till September, 2003, Lok Sabha was informed today. "The outstanding amount of income tax disputed before ITAT is Rs 28,94,102 (in lakhs) as on September, 01 2003," Minister of State for Law and Justice, P C Thomas said in a written reply.
He said that government proposed to set up additional IT appellate tribunals to clear the backlog.
Replying to a question, Minister of State for Finance, Shripad Naik said that Rs 35005.03 crore was collected as income tax by IT department in 2002-03.
He said direct tax collections had shown an increase of 18.6 per cent as on October 30, 2003 compared to the same period previous year, while indirect tax collections were up 9.56 per cent.
Direct tax targets have been fixed at Rs 95,714 crore for the current year and the indirect taxes target at Rs 1,54,861 crore.
"Direct taxes targets are likely to be achieved. All possible steps are being taken to achieve the targets set for indirect taxes," Naik added.
He said that government had decided to set up an income tax ombudsman to resolve individual complaints of tax payers and improve the quality of tax administration, and the necessary actions for setting up of institution of IT ombudsman was being taken.
