Imphal, May 28: Manipur government has decided to deploy security forces round-the-clock at strategic points in the state in view of the increasing abduction of civilians by militants, official sources said here today.
The decision to deploy forces at strategic locations was taken last night during a cabinet meeting which also discussed the kidnapping and killing of a local cloth merchant Manoj Kumar Sethi by unidentified gunmen yesterday, the sources said.
The state cabinet also discussed at length the increasing cases of kidnapping of people for ransom and decided to adopt various security measures to tackle the problem.
Top state and Central security officials have been instructed to develop a better coordination and cooperation among them, the sources said adding, both the security agencies have also been told to share intelligence inputs to effectively launch counter insurgency operations.
The sources said the state police had done its best to secure the release of Sethi although no formal complaint had been lodged with the police till about a week ago. Sethi had been kidnapped on April 19 last.
The police had conducted search operations and raids at various suspected places in interior parts of the state to rescue the businessman but it bore no fruits, the sources said.
So far, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for Sethi's killing, the sources said adding, that his captors had earlier demanded Rs 10 crore for his release.
