New Delhi, June 02: With an eye on the coming assembly polls, the ruling congress and opposition BJP traded charges against each other in connection with fire at a slum cluster in West Delhi where demolitions were being carried out. While BJP accused Congress of "conspiring in gutting" the slum cluster, the ruling party challenged it to carry out a "high-level" probe into the incident even a CBI inquiry. City BJP President Madan Lal Khurana, in a statement, accused the Congress party workers of torching hundreds of dwellings in Kirti Nagar here on Saturday.

Khurana said a team of BJP leaders would soon meet Lt Governor of Delhi Vijai Kapoor and demand a high level probe into the incident.

However, city Congress President Subash Chopra reacted sharply to the allegations and challenged Khurana to get a probe ordered into the incident.

"The allegations made by BJP were borne out of frustration of its city President Madan Lal Khurana, who fears that the residents there would contribute to his defeat in the next election," Chopra told a news agency here.

Fire had erupted in the Reshma camp of Kirti Nagar area on Saturday last, engulfing the slum clusters when civic authorities were demolishing illegal structures in the area.
The slum cluster of about 1,000 jhuggies, which falls in the Parliamentary constituency of Khurana is considered to be a strong hold of the congress and has been put on notice by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for demolition.
Chopra said the party was open to any inquiry, including a CBI probe in the matter and our main aim is to "bring to book all those who are guilty.
