New Delhi, May 18: The Delhi Medical Association has cautioned the people in the capital against consuming any 'herbal' drink or food as it may lead to food poisoning or other serious side--effect, if the concoction wasn't processed properly.
The DMA issued this health alert in view of the death of a youth and hospitalisation of 22 others with serious complications after they consumed a 'herbal' drink being sold by a vender in a park of the capital. It said only those 'items' be consumed which were duly approved by the appropriate authority.
DMA president Anil Bansal said most of the 'herbal' food items were prepared locally without any proper hygiene or using standard guidelines. The recent death of a youth after drinking the 'herbal' juice has already left a negative impact on the minds of the people about them.
''Even normal food items if laid in the open, under room temperature for more than two hours, can attract organisms causing serious food poisoning. Only freshly boiled hot food items can be considered safe for eating. All items which are either cold or at room temperature require specific processing so that the food does not get denatured,'' he said.
Dr Bansal also requested people to differentiate between a qualified doctor from destructive self-appointed quacks who were ''criminals out to make money.''

Several recent instances of 'fake doctors' undertaking criminal activities have come to light. Cases in example are the death of Nanku in Chirag Delhi in the hands of a Bengal quack, Isha Aggarwal selling children in Janakpuri, a quack involved in a rape case in Sultanpuri and now the latest case of young boy dying after consuming a 'health drink' in Rohini.

''So many murderers, on the prowl under the guise of selling or practising medicine, have not woken up authorities,'' he lamented.

Chairman of DMA's quackery eradication committee Naresh Chawla flayed the Delhi government and municipal corporation of Delhi for not coming up heavily against such quacks and playing with the health of the people.

The DMA has been demanding an effective ban on all kinds of quacks mushrooming in the capital immediately for making it as a healthier place to live in.
