Mumbai, Aug 20: Supreme Court will hear on August 23 a petition filed by city police seeking review of its earlier order granting bail to film financier Bharat Shah, facing trial in a special court on charge of developing links with the underworld to extort money from Bollywood personalities. The petition will come up for hearing before Justices M B Shah and B P Singh, special public prosecutor Rohini Salian told reporters here today.
On the same day, this bench would also hear a petition filed by Shah urging the apex court for a modification of its earlier order which directed him to deposit passport with police as a bail condition.
Shah has pleaded that he be allowed to visit Belgium from August 26 to attend the marriage of his nephew and niece and urged for modification of the order so that police could release his passport for this purpose.
Opposing Shah's plea, police said in an affidavit that he had obtained Rs 180 crore loan from Bank of India for business purpose without furnishing any collateral security. If he was allowed to go abroad, he may not return, it pleaded.
Shah's petition also challenged the June 26 order of the Mumbai High Court, which refused to discharge him in a case of alleged nexus with the underworld and rejected his plea for quashing framing of charges. Bureau Report
