We're talking about the Kolkata police.
An “unofficial” website of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim has cops in Kolkata stumped. Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Department, Banibrata Basu said the police would probe the exact details of those who have hosted the site and then seek details for the position of the server from Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited. The police say that they are also investigating whether there are any links between the website and the July 25 abduction of city-based businessman Partha Pratim Roy Burman, the owner of Khadim's, a shoe company.
The Kolkata Police are yet to figure that the website is the work of a prankster—this is despite the disclaimer on the homepage. It says that the site is only a tribute to the 20th century criminal king, not his “official” site. Says Basu: “Some of the contents of the site which came to our notice very recently are quite intriguing. We are verifying their authenticity in coordination with the Mumbai Police,” Basu said.
The site has been designed and powered by one Shoeb Hakim. It has also has on “offer” the services of contract killers @ Rs 9 lakh for an ordinary person and as much as Rs 5 crore for a political bigwig. But all of this is done in a click-for-a-smart-remark spirit. Take this one on the D-Company's future: “Can you tell the future? Then how can we tell you?” Most of the sections are under construction and the website owner has found a novel way to say that: Tension nahi lena ka, kuch din rukne ka, kaam chalu hai.
Hosted on Freeservers.com, a free website hosting company, dawoodibrahim.8m.com was apparently set up on March 2, 2000. It calls itself a supari commerce site: the underworld's answer to e-commerce. It “offers” a variety of services, including 'murder', 'half murder', even repair (which is what you opt for if you want to fix somebody). Coming soon is a line of Dhamki Cards. You can send threatening cards to builders, jewellers or rival gangs etc.
