Remembering Bharat Ratna MS Subbulakshmi on her birth centenary

MS Subbulakshmi was also the first Indian to perform at the United Nations General Assembly in October 1966.

Mumbai: Today is the birth centenary of one of India’s musical legends and Carnatic music exponent MS Subbulakshmi – the first ever musician to be awarded with the Bharat Ratna.

She was also the first Indian to perform at the United Nations General Assembly in October 1966. In August this year, the UN issued a stamp to mark her birth centenary.

A number of Indians, even today, wake up by listening to the Venkateshwara Suprabhatam sung by her. Her golden voice resonated divinity and her style was simply matchless. Her singing evoked the presence of the divine around and her command over Carnatic music displayed her love for her art.

Her rendition of Adi Shankaracharya’s ‘Bhaja Govindam’ is a timeless devotional piece that one can dive deep into.

Besides being blessed by singing talent, MS was also a gifted actor. She has been a part of a few classic films –‘ Sevasadanam’, ‘Savitri’, ‘Sakuntalai’ and ‘Meera’.
