Dhaka, Nov 22: Two days after 11 persons of a
Hindu family were burnt to death in Chittagong district,
attempts were made on the lives of the families of two
political leaders in Southern Jhalakhati in Bangladesh, media
reports said today.
A local leader of the Jubo League, youth wing of main opposition party Awami League, and at least five of his family
members sustained serious burn injuries after alleged cadres
of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of ruling BNP
set his house afire in Rajpasha village yesterday, 'The
Daily Star' reported.
In the second incident, attempts were made to burn ten members of the family of Saidur Rahman Swapan, Jubo League president of Shakerhat Union and his brother by setting fire to their house, locking them from outside, another daily 'The Jugantor' reported.
Swapan, who was admitted to hospital in a critical condition, said the arson attack was apparently carried out due to his family's enmity with the local BNP.
Police quoting eye witnesses said the attackers cordoned off the house, locked its doors from outside and poured gasoline all over it before setting it on fire. However, Swapan's neighbour rushed to the spot after seeing the flames and rescued the trapped victims. Meanwhile, interrogation of the persons who were arrested in connection with the burning of 11 Hindus on Thursday continued but nothing substantive has been found, the reports added. Bureau Report
