ONGC biggest winner, HFC biggest loser

The top ten profit making PSUs accounted for 68.8 per cent of net profit recorded by 122 PSUs at Rs 19,603 crore, according to Public Enterprises Survey for 2000-01 placed in Parliament on Thursday.
National Thermal Power followed ONGC in the list of profit making PSUs, netting Rs 3733 crore while Indian Oil came in third with profits of Rs 2720 crore.
Telecom giants Videsh Sanchar Nigam (VSNL), now a privatised entity, chipped in with Rs 1778 crore followed by Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) with Rs 1540 crore. Top ten loss making PSUs incurred losses of Rs 7942 crore out of total losses of Rs 12838 crore recording by all loss incurring enterprises.
The number of profit making enterpises declined from 126 in 1999-2000 to 122 in 2000-01 while number of loss making central units rose from 105 to 111 over the same period.
The profits of healthy units rose from Rs 24633 crore to Rs 28492 crore during the period while losses of the units also went up to Rs 12839 crore from Rs 10302 crore. In the loss making category, Bharat Coking Coal (BCCL) turned in a loss of Rs 1276 crore ahead of Fertiliser Corporation (FCI) that incurred losses of Rs 948 crore.
