Albany, New York, July 20: The state has paid victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and families of the dead about dlrs 32 million so far as compensation for lost salaries and burial expenses.
Among the 5,361 claims paid by the state crime victims board were 37 for onlookers who witnessed the catastrophe from within 10 blocks of the world trade Centre. Traumatised onlookers can get counselling for life through the state, board Chairwoman Joan Cusack said.
Half the claims were filed by spouses, parents or domestic partners of the 2,823 people killed in the attack on the twin towers. The rest were injured survivors, Cusack said.
As those claims dwindle, the requests for counselling are expected to rise.
``There's anticipation as we get closer to the anniversary that for people who initially moved on, the painful experience associated with shock is going to be revived,'' said dr. Robert Schachter, executive director of the national association of social workers' New York city chapter.
