Supreme Court on Friday dismissed two writ petitions seeking initiating of contempt of court proceedings against Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal for his alleged public statement that the state government would not implement the Apex Court`s order with regard to construction of Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.
A division bench comprising Justice G B Pattanaik and Justice Brijesh Kumar said, ``We do not see any reason to initiate contempt proceedings at this stage``.
The court said that it has given one year time to the Punjab government to implement the order regarding the construction of the SYL canal.
Stating it was not an appropriate stage to consider such an action, the court expressed displeasure over filing of the petition by Pratap Singh Chautala and Sher Singh saying ``You want to make use of it in the election``. The court in a judgment last month had given the Punjab government one year time for construction of the canal.
