Gopalganj, July 22: Around 700 prisoners, who were on an indefinite hunger strike in the over-crowded Gopalganj district jail for the past two days to protest lack of civic amenities, have called off their agitation after the district administration's assurance to look into their demands.
Jail Superintendent Shivendra Priyardshi told today that the prisoners ended their strike after a fruitful talk with senior district officials last night.
He said the inmates were assured that district judge and district magistrate would soon visit the jail to have an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and would do the needful to improve civic amenities in the jail, built in 1920s.
The government has already approved construction of a new jail building to ease the accommodation pressure in the jail, he said.
Following talks with the officials, the agitators called off their hunger strike and took food last night, the jail Superintendent said.
Against a capacity of 55 prisoners, the Gopalganj district jail currently has 753 inmates. Bureau Report
