Imphal, Jan 14: United Committee Manipur, an influential apex body of social organisations in the state, declared "indefinite emergency" in Manipur from midnight tonight to prevent communal disharmony and clashes in view of the "provocative" statement of NSCN(I-M) leaders on Nagaland's territory, UCM president Sapamcha Jadumani said.
UCM's decision to declare "emergency" followed the statement of NSCN(I-M) general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah that "Ukhrul (in Manipur) is not the land of meiteis", who are a majority community in the state.
The aim of the "emergency" was to prevent any violence in the state in view of the reported threat to the territorial integrity of Manipur and the decision to this effect was taken at the UCM executive meeting, Jadumani said.
He asked people to remain calm and alert during the "emergency" and thwart any attempt to disintegrate Manipur while settling issue with an underground outfit.
"The people of Manipur will not remain quiet if any attempt was made to break up this historic state by distorting the historical facts," he said during a press meet at which UCM secretary general Khomdram Ratan and other leaders were also present.
Several organisations, including All Manipur Students Union and political parties had earlier condemned Muivah's statement and said that Ukhrul was a part of Manipur, which belonged to Manipuris who include Meiteis, Tangkhuls (Muivah's community), Mao, Kukis, Muslims, Kabuis, etc.
