Mumbai, Aug 27: Mumbai police today described the twin blast that rocked Mumbai on Monday killing 52 people and injuring over 100 as an outcome of a "well planned and sophisticatedly executed task, involving highly trained
persons."
Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Satyapal Singh told reporters that the entire blast appears to be a "calculated move carried out in a planned manner using trained persons."
The police also strongly suspect that the blast was the handiwork of the Lashkar-e-Toiba, using persons from the banned outfit, the Students Islamic Movement of India.
Tracing out the operation of the militant outfit, he said there were strong reasons to believe that the main headquarters were located in Pakistan, which passes instructions to an outfit located in Saudi Arabia, who in turn controls the activities of the group in Mumbai. Police suspect that there were five main militant outfits at work in the country, with Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed mainly operating in the city.
Police were also probing reports of the use of women fidayeen group in the terrorist attack. "Even the underworld uses women and hence we cannot rule out the possibility. However, we have yet to confirm these reports," he said. The police were also examining media reports of immigrant Bangladeshis being used for carrying out the work.
Declining to describe the blast as a "failure of intelligence collection," he said, "it is impossible to keep track of nearly 58 lakh people who travel by trains daily and 46 lakh passengers who travel by bus daily."
