Chennai, Nov 07: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa came down heavily on the Centre, Medical Council
of India and All India Council for Technical Education for
permitting self financing engineering and medical colleges in
Tamil Nadu without the state government's clearance.
Due to this, there was a mushroom growth in engineering
and medical colleges in the state, she told the assembly
intervening during the debate on the appropriation bill.
In some colleges, there was no infrastructure and many did not appoint qualified teachers and the quality of education was affected, she said.
Jayalalithaa said she had written letters to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Union Human Resources Development Minister Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, criticising the Centre's policy of allowing self-financing engineering and medical colleges, without the knowledge of the state government.
"Some times, we have to permit such colleges under the directives of the courts also", she said adding that the state was helpless in this case.
Jayalalithaa's intervention came when Congress MLA C Gnanasekaran asked how a private medical college was allowed to be started in the city without the knowledge of the state government.
When the Medical Council of India was not allowing the state to open three medical colleges in the state, a deemed university had permission from the Union Health Ministry and MCI, state Health Minister N Thalavaisundaram said.
The state would take action against the college, he said.
