The eight-day-old fast undertaken by a section of the law college students in Chennai was called off after an inquiry committee set up by the Madras High Court submitted its report. Police said as soon as the news was conveyed to the fasting students that the committee had submitted its report as required by the high court, the students called off their agitation.
The students had been fasting since December 10 demanding action against police personnel and withdrawal of all cases registered against the students.
In a related development, advocates boycotted courts in Madurai, Salem, Tirunelvelli and Dindigul among other places to express solidarity with the students and demanding action against policemen. The students' agitation was sparked off following a clash between police, public and inmates of the Ambedkar Law College over payment of bills to a nearby hotel leading to police action, which left 60 people, including 30 students and 17 policemen, injured.
