Los Angeles, July 17: Swashbuckling adventures were the name of the game at the North American box office this weekend. The live-action Disney film "Pirates of the Caribbean" took the number one spot, collecting a respectable $46.5 million (USD) between Friday and Sunday.
The action flick is loosely based on a ride at the Disneyland theme park; in this version, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom star as bold seafarers who must battle a vicious pirate, played by Geoffrey Rush. The news was less encouraging for the week's other big-budget debut. The Sean Connery-led comic book adaptation "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" placed second with a $23 million take. Still, the film is expected to turn a profit since it was budgeted at a comparably modest $70 million . After a solid opening last session, "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" experienced a week-to-week drop of more than fifty percent. Despite the continued visibility of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the action sequel picked up only $19.6 million dollars, enough for a third-place finish. Nonetheless, T3 has now grossed more than $110 million since its North American debut on July 2nd.
