Bridgetown, Oct 05: Newly elected West Indies Cricket Board president Teddy Griffith has said one of his main goals was to elevate the West Indies to be among the top three teams in international cricket within two years.
The West Indies is ranked no. 8 out of 10 test teams, ahead of only Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. The regional team is no. 5 in one-day international rankings.
Griffith, 67, who was elected to take over from fellow Barbadian Rev Wes Hall on Tuesday, made the comments yesterday at a news conference outlining his visions for the cricket board. "It is clear to us that despite signs of emergence over the past few years as a competitive force in world cricket, the performance of the West Indies senior team has been inconsistent and spotty," Griffith said.
"During the next 12 months the senior team needs to use the opportunity of a very challenging schedule of international tours to cement and procure consistent winning habits and performances," he said.
The West Indies tours Zimbabwe and South Africa between November and February before returning home to face England and Bangladesh. The West Indies were unofficial world champions from 1980-1999 before the ICC instituted new championship guidelines.
