Singpore, Oct 27: Muslims in ultramodern Singapore
can use their subway cash cards to make traditional charity
donations during this year's Islamic holy month of Ramadan, a
Muslim Affairs spokesman said today.
Machines that electronically deduct payments from the
cards have been placed at five Singapore mosques, and more
will be set up when people get used to them, said Zainul
Abidin, a spokesman for the Islamic Religious Council of
Singapore.
The stored-value cards are already used as subway passes in Singapore, a wealthy southeast Asian city-state known for its love of cutting-edge technology. About 15 per cent of its 4 million people are Muslims.
Muslims who observe Ramadan traditionally donate money to the poor during the holy month.
