New Delhi, May 30: Newly-appointed UPCC president Jagdambika Pal Singh today demanded dismissal of Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh saying the BSP-BJP government was reduced to minority following withdrawal of 14-MLA strong Rashtriya Lok Dal headed by Ajit Singh.
"This government (Mayawati) should be dismissed immediately as it has no moral right to continue in office as it has been reduced to a minority following withdrawal of RLD support,” Singh told reporters at the AICC headquarters here.
Singh, who was appointed UPCC chief yesterday, threatened that opposition would launch agitation and dharna and approach people directly to expose the coalition government in the state if the governor failed to fulfil his constitutional duty.
He said that the Governor, before inviting Mayawati, had asked for a letter of support from RLD and following withdrawal of support by it, the BSP-BJP government was reduced to minority.
Asked about Samajwadi Party and RLD leaders Mulayam Singh Yadav and Ajit Singh's meeting with Sonia Gandhi yesterday, he said Congress was a national party and its support was vital for an alliance to take on communal and casteist forces.
"If BSP and BJP, which fought bitterly against each other thrice and formed governments three times in Uttar Pradesh, we would welcome such an effort by like-minded secular forces to come together in the state to provide an alternative,” he said.
Congress has 16 MLAs in the 403-member state assembly. The current strength of the assembly is 401 with two vacancies.
