Peshawar, June 15: Pakistani police today seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition and arrested three people trying to smuggle the weapons to the troubled port city of Karachi, officials said.
City police chief Tanveer Sipra told a news conference they had also arrested two accomplices in Karachi as a result of preliminary interrogation of the three smugglers.
"We hope to arrest other culprits also and smash their network," he said.
Sipra said the weapons recovered from a bus on a tip off from an informant included 20 hand grenades, three kalashnikov rifles, 10 pistol, eight rocket launchers, 3,400 rounds of anti aircraft and 340 rounds of pistol ammunition.
He said they were also carrying four kilogrammes of fine quality heroin and 250 kilos of hashish.
He said the weapons were being transported from the weapons market in the tribal town of Darra Adam Khel to Karachi for "terrorist activity" in southern Sindh and the provincial capital Karachi.
However when police presented the detainees at the news conference, they pleaded their innocence.
"We are innocent. We have no link with any terrorist group," they said, complaining that police did not detain the bus driver and his helper.
