Beijing, July 05: An under-construction subway tunnel and an eight storey building collapsed in east China's Shanghai metropolis, a report said today. However, no casualties were reported in the mishap which occurred when water began seeping into the tunnel being built for a new subway station in Huangpu district, causing the tunnel and part of an eight-story building above it to collapse on Tuesday.

All the affected residents were evacuated, Xinhua news agency reported today, adding army rescue teams were placing sandbags to prevent flooding.
The tunnel is part of the subway's new no. 4 line, linking shanghai's older western section with the new Pudong financial district across the Huangpu River that cuts through the city centre.

Chinese minister of construction Wang Guangtao inspected the rescue work at the site of the flooded subway tunnel in Shanghai yesterday.

The reason for the collapse is under investigation.
