The West Indies were 272-4 in their first innings in
reply to Sri Lanka's 354 when heavy rain stopped play in the
post-lunch session on Sunday.
Skipper Brian Lara was batting on 93, seven short of his 21st test century and the third in the last five matches.
Marlon Samuels was the other not-out batsman on five.
Umpires Daryl Harper and Billy Bowden made a series of inspections before calling off play.
The second and final test will start in Jamaica on Friday.
