Congress pesident Sonia Gandhi on Friday attacked the BJP-led government at Centre for promoting communal disharmony saying that those opposed to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi are ruling the country. Addressing a meeting of minorities at Inhauna in her parliamentary constituency of Amethi, Gandhi said, “A liberal attitude is necessary for smooth administration and those with narrow mentality can do no good for the country.” Criticising parties indulging in the politics of caste and religion, the Congress president said that her party had always fought against such forces.
She said that those opposed to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi are now ruling the country. Referring to the riots in Gujarat, Gandhi said, “Fortunately better sense prevailed in other states of the country and the riots were confined only to Gujarat.” Stating that social unity was the first step towards development, she said that the BJP-led government at the Centre, instead of promoting social harmony, is doing just the opposite.
Reiterating her party's commitment towards minority welfare, she said that Congress-ruled states had been directed to effectively implement various schemes in this direction.
She said that except Congress all other parties indulged in discriminatory politics and claimed that her party never made any compromise on the issues of secularism and social justice.
