New Delhi, June 09: Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit today asked the Centre to compensate the city government for the losses it may incur on account of giving sales tax relief on set-top boxes for pay channel viewing under the controversial Conditional Access System (CAS). She, however, evaded a direct reply to questions by reporters on the extent of relief if it was given, saying "let the boxes come first. Let us see their rates and number."

"As the Centre is introducing this scheme, it is their responsibility to make up the losses we may incur by giving sales tax relief on these boxes," Dikshit said.

Asserting that she was not opposed to introduction of CAS but the manner in which it was being implemented by the Centre, she said. "We are for new technology. But there should be openness."
Questioning the July 14 deadline given by the Centre on implementation of CAS, she said, "the user is being forced to buy these boxes. This is a created demand and not natural."
