New Delhi, Feb 20: With an eye on elections, the Government on Friday announced a Rs 6,000 crore programme to electrify one lakh villages, covering one crore households, within the next two years by merging three existing power schemes and decided to enforce stricter definition of an "electrified village".
The Union Cabinet approved the merger of Accelerated Rural Electrificaton Programme (AREP), Kutir Jyoti Yojana (KJY) and rural elecrification component of Prime Minister Grameen Yojana (PMGY) into a new two-year scheme of accelerated electrification, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said.

Swaraj said a village will be considered electrified only if a minimum of 10 households have power supply. Bureau Report
