NSCN (I-M) threatens to break ceasefire
The National Socialist Council of Nagaland threatened on Saturday to walk out of the four-year-old ceasefire pact if the government modified the agreement.
The National Socialist Council of Nagaland threatened on Saturday to walk out of the four-year-old ceasefire pact if the government modified the agreement.
"If the Indian government says the ceasefire is restricted only to the state of Nagaland then we must clarify there will be no ceasefire at all and we shall go underground once again," said V S Atem of the outlawed National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) which is spearheading the rebellion in the state.
The government "by backtracking on the ceasefire extension issue has violated the agreement," Atem said in Dimapur.
The NSCN is fighting for a separate homeland in the state.
The threat followed Friday night's decision by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to modify the truce with the rebel group so as to exclude areas beyond the state of Nagaland from the ceasefire.
